Title: Symmetry and stability in configuration and moduli spaces

Abstract:

In algebraic topology, a common way to study a space X is by constructing vector spaces that detect topological information about it.  If X has symmetries, then these symmetries are inherited by the associated vector spaces, providing invariants of X.

A recent discovery is that for many sequences of symmetric topological spaces X_n, the invariants of X_n exhibit a form of stability: they follow a uniform pattern when n is large.  I will talk about this phenomenon and structural explanations for it, focusing on examples from configuration spaces (spaces of particles) and moduli spaces of curves.

There will also be a Tea at 3:30pm in PH 330 with Dr. Tosteson on 12/9.
