Title: Bending of Floating Sheets – from Microelectromechanics to the Breakup of Glacier Tongues.
Abstract: In this talk I will revisit the elastic deformations of sheets that are floating on a liquid and that are subject to external forces.
In one limit such deformations consist of large nonlinear bending that can be purposefully integrated in the design of modern technologies, such as microelectromechanical devices.
In the other extreme, small bending strains can have catastrophic consequences for brittle systems, such as floating glacier tongues that are subjected to changing ocean conditions.
These examples illustrate the wide applicability of elasticity theory to both engineering challenges and natural phenomena.
