Title: Geometry of the compactified Jacobian and related moduli spaces
Abstract: A basic theme in algebraic geometry is that it is fruitful to study an algebraic variety by studying the geometry of an auxiliary parameter, or moduli, space. One of the most successful demonstrations of this theme is the use of the Jacobian variety, a parameter space of line bundles, in studying a curve. In my talk, I will describe the Jacobian variety and some related parameter spaces, the compactified Jacobian and the Hilbert scheme, that are used to a singular curve. In a companion talk, Dori Bejleri will explain how to use the geometry of these spaces to understand the topology of a singular curve, specifically the knot or link of the singularity.
