Title: Non-Newtonian fluids: a snotty presentation
Abstract: Fluids are an integral part of everyday life, from the coffee you drink in the morning to the wind rustling in the trees to the bar you attend at night. But not all fluids flow the same way. In this talk, I will present an overview of non-Newtonian fluid dynamics. We will start by deriving equations of motion for Newtonian fluids, in which the rate of strain is linearly proportional to the stress. We will then discuss what changes we need to make to model various other types of fluids such as shear-thinning and -thickening fluids and polymeric fluids. Time permitting, we will then discuss the computational challenges what arise when we try to solve these equations. Most importantly, we will answer the age-old question “how do I get ketchup out of this bottle?”
