Title: The Prehistory of the Hardy Inequality

Abstract: The famous classical Hardy Inequality dates back to a 1920 paper by G.H. Hardy. Hardy-Type inequalities provide a powerful tool utilized in modern analysis with many interesting applications. For example, they are closely related to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The purpose of this talk is to present a brief history of the derivation of the Hardy inequality, including the contribution of other prominent mathematicians of the time including Landau and Riesz. A number of preliminary inequalities and relevant proofs will be presented. This story provides both elegant mathematics as well as an interesting microcosm of the ways in which important results are developed. While the mathematical topics may be of particular interest to analysts, this talk is designed for all graduate students.
