How to get Access to Your H: Drive and Set Up Matlab and Mathematica NOTE: Computer packages and systems change all the time, and Macs have different operating systems, so these instructions may not apply exactly: expect to do some experimentation and consult the UNC Help Desk if necessary. 1. Install the AFS client on your computer: This will give you secure access to the main UNC server, with lots of programs plus personal storage space, known as your home directory or H: drive: While connected to the internet, go to http://shareware.unc.edu. Click on either Software or CCI Addons. Choose OpenAFS and follow the instructions for installing the AFS client on your computer. Make sure that if you have a chance you turn OFF (uncheck the box) for automatic startup of AFS. You may have to go to http://onyen.unc.edu, scroll down to Other Services, and “subscribe” to afs in order to get space to allow you to set up your H: drive. Help screens are available if necessary. You can go to http://help.unc.edu and look for the AFS client installation instructions. Note that if on your computer your username is not the same as your onyen, your H: drive may not work correctly unless you change some settings. If you do not get a J: drive "mapped" to \afs and an H: drive mapped to \afs\isis\home\(firstletterofyouronyen)\(secondletterof youronyen)\(youronyen), click on Drive Letters and add those drives, mapped to those directories. Deepending on the operating system, you may have to open "Computer", select "Add network drives", and add a J: drive with address \\afs\isis and an H: drive with address \\afs\isis\home\(firstletter ofyouronyen)\(secondletterofyouronyen)\(youronyen) as above. 2. Get tokens (click on the little lock icon on the bottom of your screen, follow the instructions for starting AFS). Note that if you have a weak or interrupted connection, as can often happen with wireless, you may lose your tokens from time to time and have to log back on. 3. Go to your H: drive and create a folder for Spring2011 and a subfolder of that for this course. This subfolder can contain further subfolders for materials, programs, homework, project data, drafts, etc. 4. From the My Computer icon, select the J: drive, then isis pc-pkg matlab70-r14sp2 (or mathematica-52) (or more recent versions if available) (older versions : matlab-r14sp1, mathematica-501) program right click on the LOCAL folder and copy it to your desktop rename it to Matlab (or Mathematica) 5. Alternatively, you can get CD's with mathematica and Matlab from the university's software acquisition center. This may be especially necessary for Matlab. Go to: http://its.unc.edu/Support/softwareacquisition/index.htm Click on the links for Matlab and Mathematica, and follow the instructions to get your CD. You should receive an email a day or so after you make the request informing you that your CD is ready and where to pick it up. 6. It may also be possible to rn Matlab through the univeristy's Virtual Computer Lab: http://vcl.unc.edu. 7. Before running Mathematica, in that folder maybe you should run PromptIndexerInstallationOFF.reg. Then you can run, from that folder, Mathematica 5.2 whenever you are connected to AFS. For Matlab, in the Matlab folder run Matlab 7.0.4 (or whichever version you have installed). You can also copy these as shortcuts to your desktop.
